materials used in the gears

TOday we will discuss about the material used in the manufacturing of the gears.the material used for manufacturing the gears depends upon the strength and service condition like wear,noise....etc.....gears can be manufactured from the metallic as well as from the non metallic materials.
the metallic gears with cut teeth are commercially obtainable from the cast iron, steel and broonze.
the non metallic materials used for making gears are wood, raw hide, very compressed paper and synthetic resins like nylon....etc.

disadvantages of the gear drive

now we will discuss some of the disadvantages of the gear drive:-

1.the main and important disadvantage of the gear drive is that it is very difficult to manufacture the gears because to manufacture gears the specials equipments are needed which is costly..

2.another disadvantage of the gears is that is there is any error during manufacturing then it may cause a big accident ....such as take a example:if the error in cutting teeth then it will cause a vibrations and noise during the operation.

advantage of gear drive

now look at the some advantages of the gear drives:-
1.it is very compact and need less space.
2.it has a very high efficiency which is very useful in transmitting motion.
3.the main advantage of gear drive is that it transmit same velocity ratio.
4.again a good advantage is that it is a very good reliable service.
5.and last is that it can be used to transmit a very large power.

FRICTION WHEELS

The motion which is transmitted by gear is usally a kinematic motion which is equivalent to the friction wheels or disc motions.

in order to understand the motion which is transmitted by the two toothed wheels consider one small and big circular wheels mounted on shaft having sufficient rough surfaces and pressing against each other.
now consider that the big wheel is keyed to the rotating shaft and the small wheel to the shaft to be rotated.
a little consideration will show you that when the big wheel starts rotating then with the help of this small shaft will also start rotate.
now see the small wheel rotated by big wheel upto that limit when the tangential force exerted by the big wheel does not exceed the maximum frictional force between these two wheels.

introduction

hi to all the basic phenomena behind the gearing system is to definite a velocity ratio which is very important to transport any motion from one place to another.and gears are used in those places where the distance between the driver and the lower is very small....gear is very efficient as there is no loss of the motion in the gear system.
